Multiple resources are available to support the teaching of the basic sciences in the Harbor Program. Our new Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC) consolidates the Orthopaedic pathology slide collection and associated instructional media. The OLC also provides text materials in basic science, and biomechanics, as well as computer resources for the access of electronic databases in basic science study as well as research pursuit.
Orthopaedic Learning Center

In collaboration with the Department of Pathology, all Orthopaedic residents have access to the post-mortem/morgue facilities not only for the purpose of performing the required basic science anatomic dissection and weekly Anatomy Conference presentation, but residents at all PGY levels of training are encouraged to utilize this valuable resource in advancing their basic science and clinical knowledge base of anatomic and surgical anatomy.

The Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA (LA BioMed), which oversees all basic and clinical research activities on the Medical Center campus, provides instruction in Biostatistics, research study design, as well as regular lectures in various areas of clinical and basic science research. These educational resources are available to all residents and faculty. The lecture series on Biostatistics presented by LA BioMed is a required part of the didactic teaching program. LA BioMed also provides personnel resources for collaboration in statistical analysis and project design in both clinical and basic science research.

The A.F. Parlow Library facility at Harbor provides additional support of resident education in the basic sciences through its extensive study space availability as well as its wealth of educational resources. This modern, free-standing, two-story facility is a major medical library affording access to an extensive on site collection of text books, periodicals, and references encompassing the spectrum of medicine and biomedical sciences including an extensive array of orthopaedic references. The library collection consists of 34,000 books, 675 current journals, and 43,000 bound journal volumes, audiovisual materials, and online resources. Multiple computer terminals allow ease of access for on-line search and retrieval of information from medical databases. Available to all residents at the Parlow Library, and from every computer terminal in the patient care areas of the HIS system at Harbor is access to Bruin Online. This service provides resident and student access to the UCLA campus library system and allows the download of articles from all journals to which the University subscribes at no charge.

Orthopaedic Learning Center

In addition to support personnel from LA BioMed, the Parlow Library, and Department of Pathology, the full-time Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery also provides valuable support to the residents as an interface with faculty and medical center resources. The experience of the CRC is also valuable in assisting the resident and faculty in the retrieval of instructional basic science and research related materials.

Funding for basic science instruction (including cadaver acquisition from the University of California Willed Body Program) as well as basic science research come from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery General Funds, The Dana M. Street Orthopaedic Society, unrestricted educational grants from industry, as well as educational grants provided by Harbor Orthopaedic alumni.
