The service schedule is structured to provide residents with 1 day in 7 free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, as well as 2 weekends off, averaged over a 4-week period, inclusive of call. One day is defined as 1 continuous 24-hour period free from all clinical, educational, and administrative duties. The rotation schedule is also organized to provide adequate time for rest and personal activities, consisting of a 10-hour time period between all daily duty periods and after in-house call. Residents are required to leave the Harbor-UCLA facility by noon on the day following call.
Oversight and compliance with regard to resident work hours is accomplished through quarterly surveys of resident staff regarding their duty hours by the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and through resident input of their duty hour information on the Verinform system. This monitoring of duty hours by the Office of Graduate Medical Education is conducted as an ongoing surveillance activity to ensure compliance by both the resident staff as well as the individual training programs Monthly rotation evaluations on the Verinform system also provide resident feedback regarding work hours. A 24-hour telephone hotline is provided to all residents to report any concerns or violations of duty hour and working environment policies. |
